The sounds of blips, beats, sampling and skratchadelika are easy to access, easier to name. Three female techno, hiphop and electronica makers word up on the invisible rules surrounding ‘boy toys’ and the invention of stategies for skill-sharing and getting taken seriously in an un-girl-tech-friendly world.

  10:30 to 12:15

Misrepresenting the Movement
By virtue of the interests that it serves and structure that it adheres to the media often stereotypes and marginalises groups and individuals. The media plays an extremely powerful role - these (mis)representations often impact on broader societal expectation of these groups - even within activist communities. Four speakers explore the modes and effects of this stereotyping.

Strategic Activism
Many of us work in an environment of relative comfort, often dealing with issues on behalf of peoples who may have a different culture and experience from our own. But are we stopping and thinking carefully about what we are doing? Are we making assumptions about our tactics? Do our plans extend beyond the 15 minutes? Two 'globalised' activists share their experiences and provide us with insights in to style, strategy and sustainability.

Breathing Space
We are denied access and input in to most all of the spaces around us - be these spaces in the so called 'public domain' of arts and media, our education systems or our street scapes. This denial of access is demonstrated through private ownership of property, the occupation of land and territories, and the ability of businesses to own and gatekeep information.
This evening will feature a critical discussion on the idea of ‘space’ from alternative and activist media spaces, autonomous and reclaimed urban spaces, and the need for Indigenous people to create spaces for symbolic and physical ownership of the land and culture of Australia.
Speakers are Naomi Klein, Tony Birch and Gavin Sullivan.

Please note: Naomi Klein will be giving a public talk for Readings Bookshop on Monday 16th July. If you are after autographs, please attend that event :-)
